About Des Moines
Des Moines, the capital of Iowa State in the US, is home to the country's most powerful insurance, finance and publishing companies. The city is also located right in the center of the Egyptian Belt in the mid-west part of the United States, the world's largest corn breeding ground. Because of this position, the city also carries the characteristics of an important agricultural city. Thus, Des Moines stands out as a city in the United Stated with a strong economy, based on the finance, agriculture, insurance and publishing sectors. The establishment of the city started with the building of a castle on the crossroads of Raccoon and Des Moines rivers to protect the rights of indigenous people living in the area. When the castle area was opened for settlement of white people in 1845, establishment of the foundations of today's Des Moines has started. Des Moines quickly grew and developed as a result of the acquisition of the 'state capital' status in 1857, and the discovery and processing of coal mines in the region. The city is named after the Des Moines River, which is passing through almost entire Iowa State. Des Moines is also very advanced in terms of culture and art. It gives importance to its museums which sheds light on its past accumulation and brings its heritage to the forefront.
There are many museums in the city. In particular, the museums that exhibit the history of agriculture are highlighted. The Living History Farm Museum, the Wallace House Museum and the Iowa Agricultural Museum are among the main museums of this kind. Des Moines State Assembly Building, Iowa State Fair, Terrace Hill, Salisbury House, Iowa Science Center and Des Moines Botanical Garden are some of the most popular spots in the city. Humid terrestrial climate is effective in the city. This is why summers are hot and humid and winters cold and snowy. Des Moines International Airport is 10.6 kilometers southwest of the city.
