Located in the Janakpur Zone in northeast Nepal the city of Jiri had a population of 7 thousand according to the 1991 census. The city has an altitude of 1,905 meters and is the eastern-most stop of the highway that comes from Kathmandu.

Reaching the city using the narrow and winding roads of this highway from Kathmandu takes about 6 to 8 hours by bus. Due to the deployment of a company of the Nepal Army in the city visitors might be searched. In 1938 the Swiss Government Aid established Jiri as a center of agricultural development. The city is also known as a trailhead for walks into the Mount Everest region. Adrenalin enthusiasts who want to go to Mount Everest can start at Jiri and head to Everest Base Camp, however starting at Jiri is very difficult.
