About Suriname

Suriname, a small country located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in South America, gained independence from centuries of Dutch, English, and Dutch rule and is now recognized as an independent nation.

The capital city, Paramaribo, is known for the Historic Inner City of Paramaribo, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Suriname Slavery Museum, located at Fort Zeelandia, preserves artifacts from the periods of British, German, and Dutch colonization. Suriname Carnival, which coincides with Brazil's carnival in February, fills the streets with brightly dressed dancers, and the festivities continue throughout the night.
The International Film Festival in April screens foreign and domestic films before the award ceremony. The festival ranks among the world's most respected film festivals, with nearly 40 foreign films from around 20 countries attending and competing annually. The Swimming Marathon in July is notable as well, with the participation of numerous national swimmers worldwide.
Roti, a chicken-based dish, is a staple in Surinamese cuisine, often served with freshly squeezed fruit juices and salads. Surinamese cherries and sweets made from those, are must-try delicacies in Suriname.
